#storytime: the boy jumping up and screaming so loud behind us is Tyler. We met him on the bus to EDC the first day. I saw he was alone so I had to be his friend and know who he was. He told us he just turned 18 two months ago, used every penny he had to buy a round trip greyhound ticket from San Jose and a 3day EDC ticket. He had just the clothes on his back, no place to stay and no money for food. We invited him to hang with us; when we got there, we looked back at him and he was crying. It was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. “I was kinda concerned about the whole EDM scene and the direction it has shifted in now that this music has reached the mainstream. Its almost like these events have become the anti-rave: pointless regulations like no light shows, cops and security scanning the crowd, corporatization and commercialization, etc. But what I learned from EDC is the rave isn’t the event, the lights, the venue, or the setup. Its contained within each and every person’s heart who chooses to surrender themselves to the music. It manifests itself through the complete liberation we experience when we let go of our fears and concerns. It allows us to recognize that these social barriers we construct are artificial, and to treat others like strangers makes no sense. And that’s what PLUR really means - total empathy with fellow ravers, where their feelings are your’s and your’s are their’s. That’s why I cherish the small random interactions with others like you and your group. After spending such a short time hanging with you guys, we could cut through superficial small talk and connect on a more meaningful level. Hopefully we will all get the opportunity to rave together again.”
